Having set out feeling very strong and positive with only 200 miles to go disaster struck, we just started a climb out of Tyndrum and my knee popped, I was in excruciating pain, but foolishly pushed on for another mile or so and then had to give in, literally falling off my bike on the side of the road. Paul soon realising the pain I was in flagged down a pick up truck who took me and my bike back down to Tyndrum and called a Paramedic, after a brief assessment and being wheeled round in a wheel chair by Paul and doing our best impression of Lou and Andy it was straight off hospital. Thinking everything would be ok we agreed that Paul would push on and I would join him when I could. After a long wait I finally saw the doctor and explained what happened she had that look on her face which told me that this was the end of the road. Still not convinced that I couldn’t ride I asked her what she could give me?, “give you what?” she replied “something to get me back on my bike” I said. “I don’t think you realise the severity of your injury, you will be leaving hospital on crutches”. I was devastated, absolutely gutted, not only will I not be able to complete our ride but Paul will now have to ride the rest of the 150 miles on his own which is just horrible and soul destroying.

The official diagnosis is - Apart from feeling incredibly sorry for myself I have ruptured my medial ligaments on my right knee and have some bleeding between the ligaments and my knee bone. Sorry guys

As Neil has written above is has been something of a rollercoaster day, especially when I nearly tipped Neil out of his wheelchair into the disabled toilet!!!

I am gutted for Neil as we have come so far. Still my hope is with a good days rest Toby and I can push him over the line and we’ll still finish together.

To be honest I could have done with slowing Neil down as he is right out of the blocks in the morning but I didn’t want to slow him down this much.

The only good thing to come out of this, well out of the hospital, is the strong pain killers they gave Neil, hoping to have a few myself later!

Here’s to Neil who has achieved so much so far and here’s to crossing the line together on Saturday.
